Blessings

What does it mean to be blessed? It is about holding someone or an event in reverence and recognition. To bless is to attract peace, joy and harmony. We often express that someone is a true blessing in our lives, which speaks of our gratefulness for them.

Blessings are all around us everyday. These blessings arouse in us our gratitude. Expressions of gratitude even during times of hardship can lift the spirit, reminding us that there is goodness even during times that are troubling. Blessings are lights in the darkness. A blessing infuses the everydayness of life with sacredness. When we receive a blessing from someone we are being empowered to embrace the beauty and goodness of life. To give someone a blessing is life-giving and promotes prosperity and goodness in their life.

Any milestone in life can be a time to create a blessing ceremony. I am a firm believer that we need ceremonies such as the BlessingWay because our culture seems to be lacking in recognizing the sacredness of life during the times of passage. In the past few years, Blessingways are becoming very popular for new mothers to be and often take the place of showers. They have been adapted from the a Navajo tradition of honoring the mother about to give birth. It is a healing ceremony, not intended to heal an illness but to empower the mother-to-be let go of any negative beliefs or fears she may be carrying so that she can embrace all the blessings, prayers, and honor that family and friends wish for her. It is a ceremony of helping the mother to recognize her innate strength to give birth and take on the role of motherhood with the support of family and friends. I highly recommend the book: Yana Cortlund, Barb Lucke and Donna Miller Watelet, Mother Rising: The Blessing Way Journey into Motherhood.
